Johnson Bible thumped by Eagles 116-37

2008 December 3

See what I did there? Bible thumped? Other possible headlines:

• Eagles hand Johnson Bible beating
• Asbury shows no mercy to Johnson Bible
• Asbury defense immerses JBC
• Eagles beat the Hell out of the Preachers (hat tip to Bob for that one)

Anyway, no sense making this an in-depth post. I just wanted to point out that score and show how witty I am.

The game got out of hand in a hurry. Asbury led 41-4 with less than six minutes left before Johnson Bible went on a run, scoring on back-to-back possessions. The halftime score was 64-16. Asbury had 14 assists, 0 turnovers. The Preachers had 20 turnovers, 0 assists. It was a laugher. It could have been worse — Asbury missed nine layups in the half. Regardless, the 79-point victory was the most lopsided in school history, surpassing a 94-35 win over Pratt Community College on Jan. 10, 2000.

But you can’t put too much analysis on a game where the opponent comes in 0-7, already having lost by 95 and 82 in two previous games. So let’s go to the bullet points:

• No Asbury player played more than 18:07 (Tyler Logsdon’s time).

• Cory Britt was the only Eagle to not play. He has a wrist injury and will be out until the New Year.

• Shouse said after the game he is looking at Logsdon and Patrick Crouse to fill in for Britt while he is out. Logsdon had three points, five rebounds, four assists and four steals, and Crouse had 12 points, five rebounds, two assists and two steals. Sounds like a platoon to me.

• Freshman Zach Swanson, finally eligible after getting his home school transcript accepted, went 3-for-3 in his debut. He hit his first-career shot, a 3-pointer, and he converted both of his layup attempts.

• Asbury got 28 assists and just four turnovers. They had been averaging 16.8 turnovers per game coming in.

• They forced 30 turnovers, the third time this season they have caused at least 30.

• John Ensign did not attempt a field goal in 10 minutes. Shouse normally relies on him for cleanup buckets, and he has hit nine of his 16 3-pointers this season.

• Shouse has been saying that Keith Price is playing well enough to start, but he still wants to push him to keep up with the offense. Price got his first start of the season, putting up four points and six boards.

• Asbury’s 116 was the fourth-highest point total of the season and the fourth time the Eagles have come within 10 points of breaking the school record of 125. They tied it Nov. 7 against Kuyper College.
